Reporter John Sutter and I traveled to Mauritania for 10 days to report on the last country in the world to abolish slavery. While we were in post-production on the main story, Mauritania: Slavery’s Last Stronghold, we also traveled to Ohio to visit with a woman who had escaped slavery. We thought it was important to show how issues that seem very far away can be closer than one might think.

This video was a challenge to shoot, as our subject was unable to give her real name or show her face, out of fear for her family still in West Africa.
